The Mt. Desert Festival of Chamber Music takes pleasure in announcing its 49th anniversary season of summer concerts at the historic Neighborhood House in Northeast Harbor, Maine. Four prominent string quartets will be performing at the festival. The following are some highlights of the season:

Inside

The Grammy Award-winning Parker Quartet makes their debut at the festival to open the series on July 24th with a program to include the "Intimate Letters" quartet by Czech composer Leoš Janáček, as well as Dohnányi's beloved C minor Piano Quintet with pianist/music director Todd Crow.

On July 31st, the Shanghai Quartet performs a concert with Todd Crow to include the rarely heard Piano Quintet by the late nineteenth/early twentieth century American composer Arthur Foote.

The August 7th program will feature the return of the celebrated soprano Dominique Labelle performing Ravel and Rossini. She will be joined by guest artists violinist Stephanie Chase, violist Dov Scheindlin, cellist Mark Shuman, and flutist Mindy Kaufman.

The Brentano String Quartet returns to perform Haydn and Beethoven on August 14th. The season closes on August 21st with the Daedalus Quartet in a program to include Dvořák's grand E-flat major String Quintet with guest violist Nokuthula Ngwenyama.

Other composers to be heard this summer are Mozart, Franck, Smetana, Saint-Saëns, Berg, and Maurice Duruflé.

The festival aims to present chamber music at its best in an intimate setting. Much of the aura, which is both informal and serious, is due to the ambiance of the Neighborhood House, whose fine acoustics and old world charm add much to the intimacy of communication upon which chamber music thrives.
